Colours of Topaz

Natural Topaz stones occur in a wide range of colour, however, most of these gemstones are colourless.

The second most common colour of Topaz is red and pink. Red, pink, violet and purple colour occur because of the traces of chromium.

People especially enjoy “imperial Topaz”, which is a variety of Topaz where red and orange appear in the same crystal. These gemstones are found mostly in Brasil.

The lowest value has Topaz with brown or yellow colour. Topaz gemstones with these colour are very often heated, irradiated, coated, or treated in other ways to adjust their colour.

Besides all of these colours, Topaz also includes tones and shades of blue and green.

Finding natural blue Topaz is extremely rare and the colour is very often light blue. Because of this, almost every piece of Blue Topaz on the market is colourless Topaz that has been irradiated and heated to make a dark blue colour. This type of irradiation can make the Topaz slightly radioactive but the level of radioactivity declines as soon as the irradiation is done. Nowadays, Blue Topaz can be bought in three shades: sky blue, Swiss blue and London blue.

Another favourite variety of Topaz is Mystic Topaz. Mystic Topaz is natural colourless Topaz that was artificially coated, which gave it a magnificent rainbow look.
